Description:
MerGeo is seeking a member of the active outdoors sports community to direct marketing efforts, primarily for its public events, and also for its private events, educational services, and products.
The primary focus of the work is on our three series of events: Northwest Trail Runs, Northwest Nav Races, and Street Scramble.
An ideal candidate would be an enthusiastic representative of our brand and a strong and creative networker who loves to connect with participants, partners, and other outdoor enthusiasts, and who has a finger on the pulse of the trail running and broader outdoor sports scenes. The Marketing Manager manages social media, email marketing and customer communications, and web publishing and updates.
The Marketing Manager’s main responsibilities include:
- Grow attendance at events
- Seek and maintain strong relationships, including with the trail running and navigation communities
- Be the public voice of the company on social media, including answering customer inquiries, directing more detailed inquiries to other staff for response, and following up to ensure responsiveness to customer needs
- Identify and pursue a variety of both recurring and unique promotion and marketing opportunities, presenting the pros and cons to other staff and the company owner
- Create online and printed marketing campaigns and materials, create and execute a deployment/distribution plan, and track outcomes
- Submit events to online and print event calendars and track presence there
- Manage current sponsor relationships and pursue new ones, ensuring that obligations are being met and opportunities pursued on both sides
- Create clear and compelling public-facing written communications, both for registered event participants and for prospective customers
- Create website pages, including writing and editing text, taking and inserting photos, and editing those photos and other images
- Participate in an advisory role in certain decisions related to the business, including creating our event schedule and some details of how we present our events
Report to:
This position reports to the company Owner and works alongside the Event & Operations Director, as well as liaising with the Data Manager and other staff.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Able to initiate and maintain relationships with the trail running and navigation and orienteering communities
- Able to cite the pros and cons of an opportunity and evaluate whether it is a worthwhile investment for the company. Able to prioritize work by positive impact
- Able to keep tabs on the online and offline presence of the company
- Able to track one’s own work as well as work of other employees with whom one is coordinating and assign tasks with advance notice and follow-up
- Able to track and execute tasks that need to be done months to a year in advance of an event
- Strong command of English, with excellent writing skills
- Computer proficiency, including Excel or a similar spreadsheet application, and comfort working online, including blogging, online form creation and use (programming skills not necessary), and web publishing
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Can shoot photos on a DSLR camera at events, or willing to learn
- Experience with WordPress websites
- Graphic design skills; proficient in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, or similar software
- Interest in course marking and the requisite skills: good visual/spatial skills, map literacy, comfort and self-sufficiency working alone in the outdoors
Company Overview:
MerGeo is a Seattle-based company that produces private and public events that promote exploration of the outdoors, whether wooded or urban, from four kilometer trail runs to 24-hour navigation races. We love providing opportunities for beginners to engage with the outdoors, while also creating opportunities for seasoned outdoors people and top athletes to challenge themselves.
Location:
The office is in Magnuson Park in Seattle, WA. Events primarily take place all over the greater Puget Sound area, with some events across Washington State, though the Marketing Manager is not required to be at all events. The Marketing Manager may work primarily from home, however trips to event venues or to visit partners are needed. Hours are often flexible and are event schedule dependent.
Employment and Compensation:
W-2 employee, 15-30 hours per week, $22/hour starting base pay with discretionary bonuses and pay raises dependent upon personal and company performance. Opportunity to increase hours and responsibilities for a very strong performer.
